De Waal

Stellenbosch

The De Waal story began in 1715 when Jan de Waal arrived in Cape Town and settled in 93 Bree Street. He made his first wine on his farm, Schotschekloof in the Bo-Kaap. The farm house on his farm still exists today! After four generations in Cape Town, the De Waal's moved to Stellenbosch. In 1864, the De Waal family settled on Uiterwyk Estate in the Stellenbosch Kloof Valley on what was then the main road between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Parts of this road still exist today and visitors to the Estate drive on a section without even knowing it! Today, the ninth generation of this family - and the fifth generation on Uiterwyk - is maintaining their rich winemaking tradition on Uiterwyk Estate, Home of De Waal Wines.

At De Waal Wines, one can travel through history to the modern era of our wine industry because, here, the best of the past has been retained while adjustments and innovations have been incorporated to keep in step with present and future demands. Old and new exist here in perfect harmony.
